Health Insurance 101

2/4/2011 2:20:00 PM

I am surprised that I wasn’t able to help as many people as I wanted to this week.
There were numerous requests for quotes and information about health and life products but for some reason, very few of those folks who were interested wanted to start an application. Just to be clear, when you are looking for health insurance, in most states...you MUST be APPROVED for health insurance. It’s a process similar to that of applying for college. I know weird eh? You would think that insurance companies would want as many subscribers as possible. This is not the case. The nationwide carriers can be very picky about who they want to take on as a potential risk. For instance, if you are carrying a few extra pounds, have slightly elevated blood pressure and have bad knees, the likelihood of you being offered major medical coverage is slim to none! This is where a good agent of broker comes in handy. Let me explain.

When I speak to a new person interested in acquiring health insurance I dig in. I want to know what makes this new person tick. Of course I want to know all of the pre-existing conditions and daily medications, but more importantly, I want to know WHY YOU THINK HEALTH AND LIFE INSURANCE ARE IMPORTANT INVESTMENTS TO MAKE! Many young people I speak to believe there is no value in health insurance because they are so “healthy”. They never go to the doctor and they feel invincible. When I explain that health insurance should be bought when you are healthy, their response is...”Well that is because you want me to buy so you can make money”. I would be lying if I said that I don’t make money helping you find a perfect product but this is not my only motivation. I simply love to help other people. It feeds my need to look like a hero! In the past 11 years, this is how I have made myself feel like a productive member of society.

I truly feel that I have been given “gifts”. One of my gifts is my ability to use the English language to help others get what they want and need. Completing health and life insurance applications is how I have been sharing my god given gifts/talents for over a decade. I have to make you look like a good risk to an insurance company. I have to make a case for them taking you on with all of your pre-existing conditions. Aha, you are thinking, “Carolyn, I don’t have any pre existing conditions so I am all set. You can go back to Brown and write that English literature paper you have been dying to submit if you want...” Well, that is what you think. Just when you thought it was safe to go without a literate and semi intelligent agent/broker, Boof! The MIB reports back that you had a suspicious mole/cyst/ekg 4 years ago. Darn, how do they know this???? It’s because there is no such thing as privacy. Believe me when I tell you that HIPAA is a joke! I will come back to that topic at another time.

So to wrap thoughts up here, my tip for week is DON’T DO IT ALONE. HIRE A BROKER/AGENT TO HELP YOU WITH ALL OF YOUR APPLICATIONS. Like I would never do my own plumbing, you shouldn’t do your own health/life applications. The chances of your being declined or rated up for coverage go up infinitely when you attempt to do apply yourself. Once you have a decline on your record from just one carrier, it is virtually impossible to convince another that you are worthy.

So pick up the phone before you leap into the world of health and life applications. Leave it to a pro like the, me, the Fox! I am free to you and worth every penny of your hard earned free time and money.
Ciao for now and pray for peace in Egypt. Now there is a country that could use better medical coverage....See you on the next non-stop to Cairo.
